DESCRIPTION

NOTOS is a hard X-ray beamline devoted to X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and instrumentation tests. It is designed (but not limited) to study in situ and operando processes by combination of XAS-XRD measurements at the same sample position. NOTOS is the result from the confluence between the Metrology and Test Beamline proposed for ALBA phase II and the transfer of ESRF’s BM25a, devoted to XAS and PD.

NOTOS aims to cover specific needs of several scientific disciplines such as chemistry, catalysis, energy science, nanomaterials, condensed matter and environmental science for the study of the electronic structure, short (XAS) and long range order (XRD). Two experimental endstations will be available: (i) the multipurpose and (ii) the PD-XAS endstations. The first one is an open space available for metrology application and XAS measurements in both fluorescence and transmission geometry, while the second one is equipped with a two-circle diffractometer allowing the combination of XAS, in transmission and fluorescence modes, and XRD. A gas system including several gas lines with flow and pressure control will be also available for the experiments with full integration to the beamline controls for an easy and user friendly operation.

A third endstation, located in the Optics Hutch (2 m length space) is available for metrology and instrumental development. This third station will allow applying new methodologies and concepts to improve beamline instruments by using white, pink or monochromatic beam.

The beamline operates between 4.5 and 30keV (Bending Magnet source) and allows to collect XAS spectra of a wide range of elements as it is shown in the following figure:

 FEDER

NOTOS beamline is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) within the Spanish Pluri-Regional Operative Programme (former Smart Growth Operative Programme) 2014-2020.

STATUS

NOTOS beamline is currently in operation. The first expert and academic user experiments were performed on 26th of May and 24th of May 2022, respectively.
