RESEARCHERS VISUALIZE IN 3D HOW SARS-COV-2 REPLICATES IN CELLS

The use of different microscopy and tomography techniques, including synchrotron light, unveils how lung cells are modified along the infection in cell culture models. The work is the result of the European consortium CoCID (Compact Cell Imaging Device) with the participation of CSIC groups and the ALBA Synchrotron.

MAGNETOTACTIC MICROORGANISMS STUDIED THROUGH MATERIALS SCIENCE AND ADVANCED IMAGING TECHNIQUES

New insights about the symbiosis between microbial organisms have been revealed. It is known microorganisms have magnetic properties that allow them to navigate collectively in sediments. Now, a new work opens the way to apply interdisciplinary approaches between materials science and these microbial organisms to understand mechanisms associated with the emergence of new biological functions. Studies at MISTRAL beamline of ALBA have contributed to understand how the bacteria symbionts physically interact with their host and the origin of the magnetic properties of the ensemble.

RESEARCHERS OBSERVE TOPOLOGICAL MAGNETIC MONOPOLES AND DIPOLES IN A FERROMAGNETIC MATERIAL

A scientific collaboration between scientists from Universidad de Oviedo and ALBA Synchrotron has achieved a detailed description of magnetic singularities and their interactions from the analysis of data acquired at MISTRAL beamline with the magnetic vector tomography technique. The results of the study, fully experimental not involving simulations and published at Communications Physics, provide a solid ground to understand fundamental knowledge about these singularities, what may have future applications on the design of magnetic devices.

GENE THERAPY PROVED AGAINST MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY WITH THE ALBA SYNCHROTRON

A study by the Sant Joan de Déu Research Institute, ICFO, CIBERER and the ALBA Synchrotron has helped demonstrate that gene therapy can reverse the effects of the mutation that causes the symptoms of congenital muscular dystrophy in patient cells. The mutation, which leads to a disorder in the body's collagen, has been silenced through a genetic editing technique based on the CRISPR/Cas9 system. Experiments at the MISTRAL beamline in ALBA have revealed previously unknown cell damage.Congenital muscular dystrophy is a rare minority disease that mainly affects children and has no treatment.

SOFT X-RAY VECTOR TOMOGRAPHY REVEALS 3D MAGNETIC CONFIGURATION OF FERRIMAGNETIC MULTILAYERS WITH COMPETING INTERACTIONS

Researchers from the Physics Department of the Universidad de Oviedo, CINN-CSIC and HZB, in collaboration with ALBA, have explored the magnetic configuration of ferrimagnetic structures often employed to build modern spintronic devices and magnetic recording media. At the MISTRAL beamline of ALBA, using vector magnetic tomography, a magnetic trilayer fabricated at Oviedo was characterized. These findings will permit to generate precise physical models describing the magnetic behaviour of this type of systems and control and exploit them for the design of spintronics and magnetic storage devices.
